Overview

The primary purpose of this position is to oversee the Asia Pacific Data Privacy Program and be the Asia Pacific Data Protection subject matter expert on all activities associated with the management of personal data.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in strategic planning initiatives relating to data protection with the Director, Global Data Privacy, Chief Privacy Officer, and other Cook Medical Executive leaders.
  • Provide practical guidance and advice internally on Data Protection matters while working as part of a global data privacy team under the guidance of the Director, Global Data Privacy and Cook’s Chief Privacy Officer with support from APAC Legal Counsel.
  • Proactively seek opportunities for process improvement and program maturation.
  • Engage with regional Government Affairs colleagues to provide comment on proposed regulatory drafts and seek opportunities to educate policymakers.
  • Develop regional Data Protection policies and procedures and update regularly.
  • Advise colleagues tasked with data protection related assessments (PIPIAs, CTAs, DPIAs) and agreements (DPAs and China Standard Contracts) as needed.
  • Support review and completion of applicable data protection assessments, agreements, and notices where appropriate.
  • Oversee the regional training programs for employees on Data Protection and direct additional training on this subject as required.
  • Advise the IT department and Cook Group Security Standards Operations Team of new data protection requirements to be incorporated into existing and new IT projects.
  • Act as a liaison between functions and IT in relation to explanation and resolution of Data Protection issues.
  • Oversight of maintaining current APAC policies, resources, and notices on the Global Data Privacy SharePoint intranet site.
  • Work with all functions collaboratively to ensure that Data Protection considerations are incorporated at the outset of new projects “Privacy by Design”.
  • Work with site Ethics & Compliance representatives on Data Privacy APAC program support initiatives to maintain compliance with current requirements and to develop and execute agreed solutions and efficient processes.
  • Maintain an awareness of changing Data Protection requirements in the APAC region to ensure that business processes are prepared for upcoming changes.
  • Proactive risk identification and mitigation.
  • Assist with the investigation and reporting of data breaches and resolution as may be required including liaising with data subjects and Data Protection Authorities as appropriate.
  • Provide regular updates to Cook APAC Senior management team.
  • Present or provide updates upon request to the Director, Global Data Privacy and Chief Privacy Officer for reports to global executive management including the board oversight committee.
  • Oversee regional regulatory updates upon request for inclusion in Cook’s government affairs report.
  • Oversee documentation for the APAC portion of the Data Privacy Global Program Calendar and provide periodic review to ensure accuracy.
  • Work collaboratively with Cook counterparts globally to achieve a one Cook approach to Data Protection requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with the external Data Protection community, building up an APAC network of contacts and advisors.
  • Participate in Global Ethics & Compliance initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Relevant legal degree preferred. 
  • A professional qualification in Data Protection will be advantageous.
  • Minimum of 5-8 years’ experience in a Data Protection role.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience partnering with groups, teams, or colleagues on compliance projects.
  • Knowledge of international privacy and data security regulations.
  • Good understanding of IT technical requirements and challenges advantageous.
  • Excellent analytical, reading/comprehension, writing skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritize a dynamic workload and manage conflicting deadlines.
  • Must possess ability to exercise good judgment, communicate with clarity, diplomacy, and discretion.
  • Excellent leadership, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to work independently under general supervision and occasionally work as part of a larger inter-disciplinary team.
  • Asia-Pacific language, other than English advantageous.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively on an individual and group basis.
  • Availability and willingness to travel on company business.
